Intarsia is defined as "a mosaic made from pieces of wood". It is similar to marquetry, which uses veneers. The examples of intarsia displayed on this site are constructed with wood about 1/4" thick. The unique texture of this artwork is a result of the wood being highly figured. This wood reflects light differently from different viewing angles, and creates depth and movement that cannot be experienced from a photograph. Tinting colors are used on some of the parts, but only transparent color, so that the reflective figure is not lost. The many pieces are then joined together much like a jigsaw puzzle, with attention to keeping the joinery as tight as possible, thereby minimizing the seams.
