More information on custom gunstocks

Over the years, gunstocks have become standardized in their dimensions, and most manufacturers today produce stocks made to these standards to save money. As a result, many people who are not of "standard" sizes, have to shoulder these guns unnaturally. Bad shooting habits may develop, and accurracy may suffer. A gun that fits correctly is a pleasure to shoot, is quicker on the target, and more comfortable to use for longer durations.

A custom stock can be as unique as you want it to be. It can be "standard" in appearance, but made to fit exactly to the owner's proportions. It can feature grips that are carved to the shape of the owner's hands. It can be made out of traditional woods, straight grained, or highly figured, solid or laminated. It can have traditional checkering pattern, or a custom design. Inlays and carvings can personalize any stock.

A wooden factory stock can usually be modified to fit the owner. Custom checkering, carving or inlays can be added to most stocks. However.....NEVER modify an antique or other desireable gunstock where the original condition would be lost. A replacement stock is a good solution when the owner wishes to preserve the original condition of the stock AND use the gun. (Usually you can't do both!) A restocking trend today is to "upgrade" with a synthetic stock. There are some good ones, but there are lots of bad ones too - lots of cheap plastics are being sold as composite. Many of these can not be modified to suit you. Be sure you like it!!
